For the sake of the school season we thought we would find some cool inexpensive STEM activities for less than 15 dollars! Here are a few cool experiments you can do with your kids from other bloggers. They are simple and inexpensive so there is no excuse not to like them! ENJOY!
Our first STEM activity is called “Fireworks in a Jar” written by Jenae on “I Can Teach My Child!” The lesson learned today is different density in multiple liquids. For starters here's the ingredients.
Ingredients and Supplies Needed:
- 1 clear cup / glass jar
- 1 plastic or glass bowl
- Warm water
- Oil
- Food Coloring

For your first set of instructions Jenae said to fill your glass or jar with warm water. Pretty simple right! Then in the bowl pour 3 to 4 tablespoons of oil and multiple drops of different food coloring. She just did four drops of each color and called it a day. Then simply mix the oil and the colors together getting little crumb like circles of food coloring in the oil. Then, slowly pour the colorful oil mixture in to the water and watch the magic happen!
The reason for the colors exploding after they hit water is because oil has a higher density than water. So when you mix water and oil and food coloring the food coloring will separate itself from the heavy oil into the light water. Also when water mixes with food coloring it disintegrates and mixes in with the water. It’s a great easy fast and fun experiment to try with your kids on their day off of school! Keep their brains active and their spirits elevated with cool activities that don't break the bank!
