When I was a child, making these cookies with my mom was always looked forward to. It’s like playing with playdough, but instead of cleaning everything up and putting it away, the end result here is eating them! Who doesn’t love that?

Ingredients:

  • 3 c flour
  • 1/2 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • food coloring (and/or powdered drink packets or jello mix)

For those with egg allergies or if you’re simply worried, try these simple substitutions!

  • 1/2 of a medium banana, mashed
  • 1/4 cup of applesauce (or other pureed fruit)

Playdough Cookies

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy.
  3. Add egg, milk and vanilla and mix thoroughly.
  4. Add flour and baking powder and mix until well combined.
  5. Divide dough into separate bowls (depending on how many colors you want to make.)
  6. Mix in food coloring. Make sure it's bright and vibrant.
  7. Shape into whatever shapes you want (be creative.)
  8. Bake on a lined cookie sheet for 8-12 minutes (depending on thickness of cookies.)
  9. Cook on cooling racks.

Tips and Ideas:

  • Instead of (or in addition to) try using kool-aid packets or jello mix to color your cookies for some fun flavors in addition to color!
  • Build on top of your cookie cutter shapes to personalize and give cookies a fun twist!
  • Twist and combine colors for a fun tie-dye look!
