Dealing with After School Meltdowns

The start of a new school year is filled with emotions. In fact, the entire school year has its highs and lows, and it’s a lot for children to process. As they navigate their way through different teachers, new peers, a myriad of social situations, awkward moments, strange hallways, locker combinations, and crazy schedules, those emotional meters may tip out of balance. You might see a change in attitude or behavior, and it is common for children to “let loose” or melt down when they make it back to home base. After hours of holding it together, home is the only safe place to fall apart. This is a crucial time to offer grace, support, and rest. If we want to retain our influence, we have to remain their soft place to land.

 

Nothing gives children an “attitude adjustment” like connection. Here are a few ideas for staving off most meltdowns and weathering through the ones that occur.

1. Give a little extra love before school. Mornings are generally hectic for most families, but setting the alarm 10 to 15 minutes earlier can make a big difference. Spend that time snuggling, listening to music, or reading. A few extra minutes of connection in the morning will help them feel better able to face their day (and it’ll boost your mood too).
