A is for Acceptance

Our children can come to us with many traits we weren’t expecting, like high sensitivity, a strong will, sensory issues, etc. If we want to build a strong, lasting relationship with our kids, we have to accept them for who they are. We have to learn to parent the child we have, not the one we wanted to have. It’s not just about learning the different discipline techniques or tricks that work for that child, but it’s about accepting and nurturing the spirit that has come to you.

B is for Believing

I really feel that believing in our child’s innate goodness and showing our belief in them is one of the most important things we can do as parents. Children internalize the labels we place upon them. They believe of themselves what we, their parents, believe of them. You may have heard of the experiment where teachers were told that randomly selected students were smart and destined to succeed, and those children actually performed better when tested! They weren’t smarter. Their teachers just believed more in them. It’s called the Pygmalion Effect. Now bring this home to your parenting.
